Components

Data signals are transmitted over twisted-pair Ethernet cables using the RJ45 connector, which consists of several key components. Each component is explained in more detail below:

 

Connector Body: All the internal components of the RJ45 connector are housed within the connector body, which is typically made of durable plastic. Additionally, it serves as a housing for cable termination, providing physical protection and structural support for the connector.

 

Contacts: A row of eight metal contacts is arranged inside the connector body. To enhance conductivity and prevent corrosion, these contacts are usually plated with gold or another metal to enhance conductivity. A corresponding conductor within the Ethernet cable must be made electrical with each contact.

 

Insulation Displacement Connector (IDC) Slots: IDC slots are typically found on each of the eight contacts on a RJ45 connector. A twisted-pair Ethernet cable's individual conductors are terminated in these slots. A sharp blade inside the IDC slots makes contact with the underlying conductors without removing the cable's insulation when it is inserted into the connector.

 

Strain Relief Boot: 

It provides additional cable protection and prevents damage from bending or pulling by attaching a strain relief boot to the RJ45 connector. At the cable entry point, the cable entry cap is typically made of rubber or plastic material. In order to reduce the risk of damage to the connector or cable termination, the boot helps distribute stress along the cable's length.

 

Latch Clip: On the top or bottom of the connector body is a small plastic protrusion called a latch clip, also called a tab or a locking tab. RJ45 connectors are secured into Ethernet ports using this mechanism. Connectors with latch clips snap into place when fully inserted into ports, preventing accidental disconnection.

 

Shielding (Optional): A shield may be included in some RJ45 connectors to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI), especially in high-noise environments. Metal plates or shells surround shielded RJ45 connector contacts, preventing external electromagnetic interference from degrading signal quality or causing data errors.
